Born in New Orleans during the Jim Crow era, Bartholomew found early work as a caddie, absorbing the intricacies of golf in a world that barred him from playing professionally due to his race. Undeterred, he studied golf course design under the legendary Seth Raynor, a rare opportunity for a Black man at the time. His talent, perseverance, and technical mastery led him to design dozens of courses throughout Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region.
His most historic achievement came in the 1950s, when he designed Pontchartrain Park, the first public golf course in the United States built by an African American. This wasn’t just about sport, it was about access, dignity, and redefining who belonged on the fairways.
Despite the racial barriers he faced, including being denied the right to play on the very courses he built, Bartholomew’s legacy endured. In 1979, the city of New Orleans honored him by renaming a municipal course Joseph M. Bartholomew Sr. Municipal Golf Course, a lasting tribute to his genius and perseverance.
