A mathematician and human computer, carrying out mathematical calculations manually before electronic computers became commercially available. Vaughan went on to train herself and her team computer programming in preparation for the arrival of the electronic computers, as a result went on to head the programming section of the Analysis and Computation Division working for NACA and NASA at the Langley research center.
